Fixed-wing Safety

Even though Northwest MedStar's airplanes are met and loaded under the controlled environment of an airport, certain safety criteria must be followed to protect our patients, crew and EMS partners.

Wait until the engines have completely shut down. When you approach, turn off your flashing lights, and use only running and clearance lights. Back the ambulance up to the imaginary line that runs from the tip of the tail to the tip of the left wing (see diagram) and allow sufficient clearance between the airplane and your vehicle.

Loading Your Patient

  • Never walk in front of the airplane wing
  • Let the Northwest MedStar crew open and close the aircraft doors
  • You may be asked to assist in loading the patient - wait for specific directions from the crew
  • Be sure to ask the crewmembers about any directions you do not understand
  • Clear the airplane as soon as your patient is loaded
  • Remain at the airport until Northwest MedStar is airborne
